Dumfries is the traditional county town of historic Dumfriesshire, also known as ‘Queen of the South’. As a market town and formal royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway constituency, it resides near the River Nith.

Did you know Dumfries is steeped in history? Sanquhar, a village in Dumfries, is home to the oldest post office in the world, opening in 1738, as well as Scotland’s oldest working theatre, the Dumfries Theatre Royal.
